Little Busters! BD Game - Nishizono Mio's Locked-Room Murder Case!?

This time I translated the BD Game that comes with the first volume of Little Busters! ~Refrain~ anime Blu-ray. The game comes in Blu-Ray format, so you can play the game in your Blu-ray player.
The game mechanism is similar to Little Busters! visual novel, that is multiple choices to reach a specific ending. (I'll be honest, there are only two endings in this game. It's just a short game, dude. But certainly is longer than the other side stories I've ever translated.)
Additionally, I have created a complicated string of routes in HTML so you can play it in your browser. Unfortunately, it's all (mostly) texts because the Blu-ray game is protected, I can't take screenshot of it. (The images used here were all taken from glorious internet world.)

The game is about mystery solving. It's not impossible to reach the answer with the first set of hints, but there are also other hints that will help. There are some part that requires you knowledge in Japanese language, but I put some notes about it, so I hope it isn't too complicated for you to understand.

If you notice something that's odd, or if the codes aren't working for you, please leave comment or message me. This is still in beta-test. (Also, please use updated browser to play it. I'm using Firefox, so I don't know if it works well in other browsers or not)

Also, special thanks to Rincchi who provided the writeup version of the game lines, this is very helpful for the translation.

PROLOGUE

Kyousuke
"Riki, this is bad!"

After school, Kyousuke came to our classroom with unusually serious face.

Riki
"...what's wrong?"

Kyousuke
"I can't tell you here. Just come with me."

Riki
"Well, sure..."
"But I was about to go to baseball practice with Masato, Kengo and Rin."

Kyousuke
"You can leave that for later. In any case, this is more important."

Riki
"If that's the case, shouldn't we call others too...?"

I was about to call them who were still in the classroom, but Kyousuke stopped me.

Kyousuke
"That can't do, Riki. I want you alone to come with me."

Riki
"...Alright."

I don't know what is happening, but I'll just follow Kyousuke anyway.

I walk along with Kyousuke who is walking briskly a little ahead of me.
The aura coming out from his back is... quite grim.

Riki
"Hey, Kyousuke. What exactly had happened?"

Kyousuke
"You'll know soon enough."

Riki
"At least give me a hint..."

Kyousuke
"Sorry, I can't tell you that for now."

That was his answer, and he didn't say anything more than that.
...There must be some reason why he couldn't.
Only anxiety grows stronger in my chest.

Kyousuke
"Here we are."

With tense atmosphere, Kyousuke stopped after a short while of walking after we climbed up the staircase.
It was before the door of a classroom facing the hallway without sunlight in the third floor.

Riki
"Here...?"

"Art Preparation Room" is written on the plate on top of the door.
This room shouldn't have anything to do with the Little Busters at all.

Kyousuke
"Riki, try opening the door."

Kyousuke looked into my eyes and urged me to do so.

Riki
"Alright."

Kyousuke
"I have to tell you something before."
"Listen well, Riki. Whatever you see inside of this room, don't you ever scream."
"It might be too much for you."
"Nevertheless, make sure you stay quiet."

Riki
"A- alright."

I could only nod to Kyousuke who made sure about that, so much it's scary.
What exactly is happening inside this art preparation room?

Riki
"Then, I'm opening this..."

I put my hand in the sliding door handle.
But, it's not opening at all.
The door rattled and hardly moved at all, and that's all.

Riki
"...eh? It's locked?"

Kyousuke
"Ah, my bad."
"I got the key."

Riki
"...Come on, get a hold of yourself."

I take the key from Kyousuke.
I put the key in the keyhole and twist it. There's an unlocking sound and sensation from the lock.

Riki
"Now I'm really opening it for sure."

I gulped and then sled the rattling door.
The whole situation in the room entered my vision.
What came to my eyes first was... red.
The room was filled with various items in a mess, very fitting to the name of art preparation room.
But there's no need to be watchful for those items, for now.
At any rate, we know that there's a lot of things here.
I wonder if this room was originally used as regular classroom?
But, since there's no desk or chair at all, this room feels very spacious.
And right in the middle of it was what I noticed first— the color red.
A part of the floor in the classroom was dyed deep red, as if it was dyed with blood.

Riki
"...sunset?"

But the curtains were closed, and the windows are not even facing west.
Moreover... it's too red.
Then, I moved my line of sight a little above from there.

"That person" was in front of me.
"That person" was right in the middle of classroom, and strangely it didn't even entered my vision right away once I entered the classroom.
"That person" was sitting on a chair.
With her eyes closed, as if sleeping.
With her head hung, I can't see her expression at all.
Her fair white face looks even paler and lifeless, so much as if her skin is transparent.
Both of her arms are hanging limply, pulled by the force of gravity.
And below her skirt, both her legs —as if they're soaking up all the color from the sunset— were deep red.
Yes, the first thing came to my vision once I entered this room was... the red.
The red spreading all over the floor flows out from her legs.
With her skirt stretched, her bare legs are much more visible than her usual.
Usually I would look away spontaneously, but now I can't say that I do.

Riki
"Nishizono-san!"

I called out to her.

Kyousuke
"Riki—"

Kyousuke's voice quietly warned me from my back.
Right. I promised not to make any ruckus.
But, this is just...

mioded.jpg

"That person"— Nishizono Mio was there, so powerless as if she was in deep sleep.
It appeared red, of course not because it's sunset.
It's... blood.
Deep red, red, red blood dyed Nishizono-san's leg and even spreading further to the floor.
Under her feet is something shinning dully.
Is it a knife...? Is that what had hurt Nishizono-san?

Kyousuke
"As you can see, Riki..."
"Mio... is dead."

Riki
"...dead?"

I could only repeat Kyousuke's word.
Nishizono-san... is dead?
No way. There's no way such outrageous thing can happen.

Riki
"Kyousuke, what are you playing at?"
"Is this a new game of yours?"

I believed so.
Kyousuke always, always comes up with fun games for us.
Baseball is one, for example.
I'm sure what's happening here must be one of his games.

Kyousuke
"........."

But Kyousuke only shook his head silently.

Riki
"That can't be.... So she's really..."

This isn't something Kyousuke and I alone can handle.
We have to call the teachers.

Riki
"...No. That's not it. That can't be it."

First of all, I have to save Nishizono-san.
Kyousuke said so, but it's possible that she's still breathing.
Anyway, I'll have to make sure of it first.
I feel awkward to approach and touch her.
Not that I'm scared, but more that I'm unsure whether I should or could touch Nishizono-san's body like this.
Not to mention that her legs —despite drenched in red— are quite captivating.
But of course I can't say that.

Riki
"Nishizono... san."

I'll get my indoor shoes dirty, but I approach her anyway.

Kyousuke
"...hold on, Riki!"

But, Kyousuke stopped me.

Riki
"What?"

Kyousuke
"That... Mio is dead. She's dead, I'm telling you."

He sounds frantic.
...maybe, this is...
No, this must be...

Riki
"Well, I'll be calling the police then."

I took out my cellphone.

Kyousuke
"Stop!"

Riki
"Huh?"

Kyousuke
"Let's think for a little while... Don't you notice anything strange?"

Riki
"No, no... Whether I notice or not, this is more important."

Kyousuke
"Yeah, what a situation had befallen us."

Riki
"Then, let's call the police quickly."

Kyousuke
"There's no need for that."

Riki
"No, no, no. That'd be weird."

Kyousuke
"In this situation, we better not to involve and bother the police."
"Now, think."

Riki
"No matter how I think about it, it's just logical to call the police first when we find a dead body!"

Kyousuke
"Anything but that."

Riki
"If you say so, then I have no other choice but to ask you! You know something, don't you!?"

Kyousuke
"Not that too."

Riki
"No, no, no, no."

Kyousuke
"There must be something else."

Riki
"Who wouldn't call the police in this situation? And ignoring the person who likely knows about this case, and getting lost in thought in top of that... That's just stupid..."
"Kyousuke, if you know something, just spit it out already."

Kyousuke
"Hey, hey... Don't make this too hard on me."

Riki
"You're the one making this hard for me.... Come on, tell me! Tell me already!"

In the middle of our heated argument, I heard a sound "pff".
Now that I see it... Her corpse started to quiver and tremble.

Riki
"........."

And it stopped before long.

Riki
"Uh... Nosebleed?"

Kyousuke
"Well, sometimes blood does come out from corpses' nose."

Riki
"Didn't it just move?"

Kyousuke
"It didn't."

Riki
"No, no, no."

Kyousuke
"Now, find out what's strange in this situation, Riki!"

Riki
"Kyousuke stuffing tissues gently into the corpse's nose is the strangest thing so far..."

Kyousuke
"Anything but that."

Riki
"Alright, alright... I get it."

I feel sorry for teasing them too much.
I adjusted my breathing.
Then I realized.
Nishizono-san must be leading me to that.

Riki
"Now that you said it... Something... is off."

It reminds me when we were about to enter this room.
When I tried to open the door, it was locked and couldn't open.
Kyousuke had the key and I used that.

Riki
"In other words, this room was..."

I learned it from the mystery novel Nishizono-san told me about.
The crime occurring inside a room with no way out....

Riki
"...locked-room mystery."

Nishizono
"That's right, this is a locked-room murder case."

Suddenly, the corpse before me opened her eyes and spoke.
No, after the talking, she's no longer a corpse.

Riki
"...thought so."

Of course. I already guessed that since then.
This is just a big prank, I thought to myself.

Riki
"Kyousuke, your prank is in bad taste..."

Kyousuke
"Sorry. But sure it's found out right away."

Nishizono
"It was all due to the lack of my acting capability."
"Moreover..."
"...Kyou⇔Ri Reversible Couple..."[show notes]
"........."
"Acceptable."
"What a feast in my eyes."

I guess I shouldn't even try to touch that subject....

Kyousuke
"W- well, anyway... Sorry, Riki."

Riki
"I was freaked out for real at first, you know?"

Nishizono
"Please contain yourself, Naoe-san. Kyousuke-san didn't mean anything bad."
"This time, I asked Kyousuke-san to play along."
"It's all my plan and doing. If you're angry, then please lash out your anger on me."

Riki
"Nah, it's not that I'm angry. I'm just quite surprised..."

Besides, I already noticed about that somewhere along the way.
I guessed that Nishizono-san is the one behind this all.

Riki
"Yeah, I'm quite frightened."
"Anyway, Nishizono-san. Is your skirt alright?"

It's all dirty with red blood (I'm sure it's just dye).

Nishizono
"I'm using washable dye, so there's no problem about that."

It doesn't show up too much, but her uniform got dirtied as well.
I wonder if it really can come off with washing alone?

Nishizono
"I thought it is necessary to make it quite real."

Nishizono-san talks to me while still sitting in the chair.

Riki
"Then, why is your face so pale?"

Nishizono
"I tried to apply light makeup."
"...Actually, that would be a violation to the school regulations."

Saying that, her cheeks appear slight red to her embarrassment.

Nishizono
"I'm sorry, Naoe-san. It really didn't occur to me that you would approach me knowing the floor drenched in red."
"Your indoor shoes got dirty."
"...I had miscalculated."
"I'll make sure to compensate for your indoor shoes."

Riki
"Nah, it's okay."
"It'll come off once washed, right?"

Nishizono
"Well, that's true..."

Riki
"Then, there's nothing to be concerned about."

I wave my hand lightly.

Riki
"Well, I'll be going to practice now."

If they were scheming to prank me, that's a huge success.
But I'm pretty surprised that it's all Nishizono-san's ideas.

Riki
"At first I was really surprised, thinking that you're dead for real."
"Next time, let's try doing it in the test of courage."

Kyousuke
"What are you saying, Riki?"

Nishizono
"What are you talking about, Naoe-san?"

But the two of them stopped my way.

Nishizono
"The game has yet to begin."
"Surprising you alone would be a harassment."
"Starting from this point on, you are a detective who must solve the truth behind this locked-room case."

Kyousuke
"You heard her, Riki."
"How was the locked room created? You solve that mystery!"
"MISSION START!"

THE LOCKED-ROOM MYSTERY

Riki
"E- ehhh..."

So that's the real purpose of this game...
Me? Playing detective?
I can't say I have a confidence in that.

Riki
"Wait, so I just have to solve how the locked room was made?"
"Nishizono-san was "dead", right? Then, what about the culprit?"

Nishizono
"This time you don't need to point out who the culprit is."
"Kyousuke-san, please continue with the explanation."

Kyousuke
"Alright. Will do."

Kyousuke cleared his throat and started talking.

Kyousuke
"First of all, let me say this."
"The one who killed Mio... is me."

Riki
"H- Huh?"

Suddenly, a crime confession.

Kyousuke
"So there's no need to find the culprit."
"In the end, your role is to solve how the locked room was made."

Riki
"I see."

This is a game.
I have to reach the goal of this game while following the rule created by the game master.

Kyousuke
"Well, what I'll be saying from this point on is according to Nishizono's script."

...? I remember feeling something's quite off from earlier.
But I'm not sure what it is.

Kyousuke
"I am unmistakably the criminal, yet I tell no lie."
"I will only speak the truth coldly and indifferently. Riki, this is true from the very start of this game."
"...whoa, I sound like a very boring guy."
"It's as if I'm a cold-blooded, heartless guy."

Nishizono
"Kyousuke-san, please don't say anything unnecessary."

Kyousuke
"Sorry, my bad. Anyway, you are not to doubt my words, Riki."
"That is the rule of this game."

Riki
"I understand."

Kyousuke
"Well, first of all. Let me explain you about the locked room."
"The door of this room can only be locked and unlocked with this key from outside. It can't be locked from inside."
"By the way, it's possible to unlock the door from both sides."
"This room is usually locked."
"Because this is art preparation room. It's not the usual classroom to go in and out, plus it has all the items inside."

Riki
"Yeah."

I carefully listen to Kyousuke's words so I'm not missing any hint.

Kyousuke
"There are two keys for this room. And both are kept in the staff room."
"Furthermore, if you borrow the key, you must write your name and the time in the journal. And obviously, when you return the key, you must write your name and time of return as well."
"Well then. There were two people borrowing the key for today."
"One is Nishizono. She borrowed the key right after the school ended."
"And that key has yet to be returned."
"The other one is me. I borrowed it after Nishizono did. It was short before I came to pick you up."
"That's the key you used to open the door a while ago. That key."

Kyousuke points to the key I'm holding.

Riki
"...that means...?"

This room can't be locked except from outside.
The key Kyousuke borrowed had been inside the staff room until just now.

Riki
"It was locked for sure..."

I was the one who made sure of it myself when entering this room.
In other words, there's no other way but to lock the door with the other key— Nishizono-san's borrowed key.

Riki
"Then, didn't you lock the door with Nishizono-san's borrowed key after you, um... killed her?"
"And you kept the key to yourself, then you borrowed the other key from the staff room."
"So, you are still holding on Nishizono-san's key, or perhaps you hid it somewhere."
"That's all... No... that's not all, right?"

Come to think about it, there's no way Nishizono-san would write a script that simple.
After all, there's no doubt that she's a self-proclaimed mystery fan.

Nishizono
"That's right."

Still sitting on that chair, she nodded.

Nishizono
"Kyousuke-san, please continue with the explanation."

Kyousuke
"Right. Riki, the other key is right here."

Kyousuke walks to the window.
On both sides of the classroom are numerous equipment scattered, so it'd be difficult to slip through Nishizono-san without being noticed.
And then, Kyousuke crouches down near the window curtain hem.

Kyousuke
"This is the other key, in other words: the key Nishizono had borrowed."

What he has in his right hand is certainly a key.
I take the key and compare it with the other one I had in my pocket.
Both are exactly the same duplicates with each other.

Riki
"That means... Nishizono-san's key had been inside this room, is it?"

Nishizono
"That's right."

Riki
"Then, it's impossible to use this key to lock the room from outside..."
"But the other key had been inside the staff room just until Kyousuke went to borrow it."
"Moreover, there's no one else borrowing the key but Kyousuke."

Nishizono
"That's right."

Riki
"In other words... A locked room."

Nishizono
"That is correct."
"Ah... "Locked-room." What a nice ring to it..."
"Speaking of mystery, it must be locked-room. Speaking of locked-room, it must be mystery. An inseparable pair connected with a strong bond."
"Even the piece which was called the world's first mystery literature, "The Murders in the Rue Morgue" by Edgar Allan Poe, was already considered a locked-room mystery."
"Locked-room and mystery were fated to be inseparable since their very birth."
"Locked-room murder is an impossible crime. That is the essence of mystery genre."
"And since the genre was first established, it has been continuing as one of the main currents of literature. That was a great pleasure."
"In all times and places, there are so many mystery writers unable to resist that sweet temptation."
"Furthermore, even in this 21st century, on this day, there are numerous of locked-room mystery being brought into this world."
"Now, even if so ever slightly, I am offering this sweet nectar to you, so that you can experience this grand euphoria. Don't you understand, Naoe-san?"

Riki
"I get it, I get it. Please calm down first..."

Nishizono-san seemed to become so overwhelming with her long... persuasive words.

Nishizono
"...Excuse me. It seemed that I had lost my self-control for quite a while."

She soon hangs her head in shame.

Kyousuke
"I'll repeat once more. I stabbed Mio. You need not to figure what the motive is."
"In the end, you are just to figure out how the locked-room was created."

Nishizono
"As it is called, "howdunit". In other words, the main point is to solve how the crime was done."

Nishizono-san remarks.

Kyousuke
"Anyway, there's no way I'd have any reason to kill Nishizono, right?"
"Riki, you know me, don't you?"

Riki
"O- Of course."

Kyousuke
"...Riki..."

Nishizono
"Kyousuke-san, mind the excessive chatter."

Kyousuke
"...My bad. Geez, what an unpleasant role I get."

Nishizono
"Isn't that fine to have such role once in a while?"

Kyousuke
"...Let's continue. So, this is not a suicide case."

If it was a suicide, then it wouldn't be strange for the key to be inside the room... Is it?
No. Since the room can't be locked from inside, the mystery remains the same.

Kyousuke
"And Mio was killed on the spot. After being stabbed, Mio couldn't do anything."
"Heard that?"

Riki
"Yeah, I get that."

...Really, something is off.
There's something weird in Kyousuke's words.
In the rule explained in the beginning, Kyousuke will never tell a lie. That's for sure.
But, something is off...

Kyousuke
"Well, now please solve the mystery with the aforementioned hints."

Nishizono
"The mystery, that is how this room turned into locked-room."
"We have presented you all the clues."
"If it's you, Naoe-san, I'm sure you can."

Riki
"E-ehhh..."

Unconsciously I let out silly voice.

Riki
"That's all the hints? Really?"

Nishizono
"Well, then... A little more..."

When Nishizono-san was about to say something...

Haruka
"Wait a seecccc!"

Suddenly there's a figure storming through the door with great vigor.
That boisterous voice is, no doubt, belongs to that girl.

Riki
"Saigusa-san?"

Haruka
"That's right! The great detective Haru-chin has arrived!"

Nishizono
"Saigusa-san..."

Nishizono-san sighed.

Nishizono
"I did tell you to enter at the appropriate time, but this is way too unexpected."
"You should've read the situation and mind your timing."

Haruka
"Ehh, Riki-kun looks troubled, so I thought my time would come soon..."

Nishizono
"And that would be when I was about to say something, huh?"
"You should've entered before or after my speech. Now I just look stupid to be interrupted only when I was about to speak."

Haruka
"Uh, I couldn't have known the situation beyond the door, so that can't be helped."

Riki
"Don't tell me, you had been waiting outside?"

So... since I and Kyousuke entered the room, Saigusa-san had been listening about what's happening in the room from outside, huh?

Haruka
"Mio-chin begged to me, so can't help it."

Nishizono
"People like you really can't be helped."

Her face saying that with strained smile looked somehow gentle.

Nishizono
"Well, anyway..."

She turns to face me.

Nishizono
"The rival detective has appeared."
"No matter how insignificant your opponent is, I look forward to see who will solve the mystery first."

Haruka
"Hmph hmph... I won't lose to you, Riki-kun!"

Riki
"...Saigusa-san, you already know about the details, don't you?"

Haruka
"I'm not proud of it, but I know nothing!"
"Mio-chin just told me to become a "great detective" and so I did because it sounds fun."

Riki
"Then, on what purpose did you appear for?"

Nishizono-san is also whimsical on her own.

Nishizono
"Just so that she would make things lively, is what I would say."

Haruka
"Mio-chin, why so cruel?"

Then, Nishizono-san briefly explained the outline of this case.

Haruka
"I see, I see. That's just easy! I have solved this case!"

After listening to the story, Saigusa-san declared loudly.

Riki
"Huh? Seriously?"

Haruka
"Hmph hmph... This battle has already won by the great detective Haru-chin!"
"I've seen through the truth! And incidentally I didn't even do my best!"[show notes]

Saigusa-san then turned to answer nonchalantly on my confused face.

Haruka
"That doesn't mean anything in particular!"

Ignoring that, Nishizono-san proceeds to ask her.

Nishizono
"Saigusa-san, would you kindly explain your answer?"

Haruka
"The key was found near the window, wasn't it?"
"Isn't it just simple? After Kyousuke-san stabbed Mio-chin, he escaped from this room with the key, then he locked the door."
"Then he went around the school building, and then he opened the window from outside, and threw the key inside."
"And the locked-room mystery is solved."

With full confidence, Saigusa-san puffed up with pride.

Riki
"I see..."

[...but this room is high above the ground.]
[If that's the case, then the locked-room mystery might've already been solved.]
