Little Busters! SS Vol. 1 is the first official short story of the series.
This is a story about the past which was not told anywhere but here. The story is centered on Komari, and it's basically the beginning (or a short prologue/prequel) of Little Busters! and the forgotten first meeting of the main casts.
Artwork by Itaru Hinoue.
Word count roughly 4340 words.
While running the mechanical pencil alongside the ruled lines of my B5 size notebook, I suddenly think.
Perhaps, everyone also has one inside them — just a small story of their own.
Fantasies, illusions, and such in their very own little world.
I'm sure everyone must have those in their minds, even if it doesn't take on a form.
Once again, I take a look in the notebook.
I lightly flip through the pages.
Stories that had already ended. Stories that still continue. Stories that have yet to begin.
With such things, I will fill the pure white notebook....
I really like it when I come out to the rooftop.
Especially, when I eat sweet things on the rooftop.
Sweets are great. Just by eating them, you can feel energetic and a little happy.
I think it's great that I can feel that way.
I stretch my body.
Today, the weather is very nice.
It's so warm and comfortable, my eyelids just naturally close themselves.
The southern wind swipes my bangs, so I open my eyes again.
...even I find such trivial thing very wonderful.
I go down from the roof through the stairs.
Since it's not often used and no one's cleaning this place, there are dust bunnies on the corner of the steps.
Striding over the black and yellow striped bar stretched between the red cones, I landed back on the stair of the fourth floor.
...Actually, going to the rooftop is forbidden, so what I'm doing here is quite bad.
Even though I know that it's bad, my strong feeling for the rooftop can't hold me back, so it can't be helped.
To begin with, why is it prohibited, I wonder?
I turned my head around for a while.
I don't really know why.
From the stairs, I looked beyond the black and yellow bar.
Old tables and chairs were stacked up. That space felt somehow lonely.
...Perhaps, it's only me who knows that there is a place with comfortable wind and light beyond that space.
That's why, the rooftop is my place. My favorite place.
And because I think that way, I feel that going up there is a very normal thing to do.
While I was thinking like that....
Someone blew warm breath on my ear.
I jolt and look back.
There is... someone from my class.... Erm, Kurugaya-san... I think....
It has been only 2 weeks since we changed class, so there are still a lot of people I can't remember the name correctly even though I know the face.
"Wh- what is it...?"
"Um. It's just a greeting."
So she said, and she laughed excitedly.
...I don't really get it.
She's just making me surprised by doing such thing so suddenly....
"Well, I'm just wondering what were you looking at with such dreary eyes, Ms. Kamikita."
Don't tell me, Kurugaya-san saw me going in from the rooftop....
I spontaneously let out a gasp.
(Uwaa, w- wh- what should I do...)
Just like broken dam, my mind start to run out of control.
"What is it, I wonder...."
"Uuuhm, that's not it! I was eating lunch somewhere else! I came here just by chance!"
"Oh, by what chance?"
"E, errm.... Ah! You know, the pancake..."
"Th- The pancake.... U- umm... Ran away..."
"So the pancake ran away and fled up to these stairs? That's one amazing pancake..."
"Th- That's amazing, isn't it?"
A- auu... Whatever I say just turned out all jumbled. But I have to deceive her.
"Uum, that's why heee faanfee hiii...."
...with both of her hands, Kurugaya-san kneads on my cheeks.
"Fouhii fufohan hamuhamuhamu~"
...she turns them round and round.
"Um. I totally don't understand what you're saying."
She lets go of her hands.
"...A wise head makes a close mouth. What I'm trying to suggest is that you should stop saying unnecessary things."
"Well, sometimes pancakes do fly to the sky."
While saying that, she smiled at me faintly.
(...she bought it?)
Kurugaya-san softly put her hand on top of my head.
"If you're doing this kind of thing, do your best not to stand out too much."
Maybe she really noticed it after all.
Knowing or not knowing the chaos in my train of thought, Kurugaya-san turned to me and smiled.
"You really are an interesting girl."
"N- Not really.... I'm just normal..."
"Um, I guess that makes me abnormal."
"Uaah, th- that's not what I—"
"Well, life is brief, so fall in love, young maiden. I'm just a little bit envious to your innocence and how soft and smooth your cheeks are."
"Ha Ha Ha! Farewell, young lady. You should be good and spend the day singing Lovely Lovely Oh Baby."
...leaving me with those words, Kurugaya-san walked away to the corridor.
In the end, the day passed just like that without anything eventful happening.
Kurugaya-san was just like her usual. Looking bored as always, she just continued to write down things in class.
What happened in the rooftop today, maybe it's just my misunderstanding.
But... even it that's the case....
(I think Kurugaya-san doesn't often talk to others...)
The way she came to me and laughed like that, I'm sure she's trying to get along with me.
Today is warm and the weather is nice too.
So, I decided to walk around the courtyard for this lunch break.
...Actually, it's because I can't go to the rooftop today. To get out to the rooftop, a "key" is needed. But today I mistakenly left it in my dorm room.
That was a blunder, but walking around the courtyard in such nice weather like this feels so good.
On the flowerbeds in this early spring, the pansies of various colors were swayed a little by the southern wind.
Perhaps it was not a mistake that I forgot it. Even if I ended up a little bit downhearted, if there are things that can make it up, I think it's fine.
I naturally smile broadly. Somehow I feel that something fun will happen. That's the atmosphere.
Leaving the courtyard just like that, I walk toward the vending machine.
Suddenly, a figure sitting on the lawn under the Zelkova tree entered my vision.
I remember her face, but the name can't pop out in my head so easily.
Hmm, I should have already knew it, but....
Once again, I look to that girl.
On her side is a white parasol.
(Ah, that's right.)
I recalled talking to her, someone in my class. The girl with white parasol... Nishizono-san.
When she's outdoor, she never lets go of her parasol. Even on PE, she only watches and stands with her white parasol in the corner of the schoolyard.
...I have never talked much with her. She's a quiet girl. That's the kind of person Nishizono-san is.
(...what is she doing?)
Sitting on the lawn, Nishizono-san has a book on her hand.
Is she reading? ...when I look closely, it doesn't seem so.
The book is open on her right hand, but her face is facing slightly to her side.
I don't know what is she looking at, on that side across where I am.
It's just a little curiosity. I walk near to the Zelkova tree.
It seemed that she's tearing something on her palm and throwing it.
(What's that for...)
I try to get even closer.
Just a little more, and then....
I'm surprised. Little birds were flying at once.
She muttered softly, and Nishizono-san noticed me at last.
It seemed that Nishizono-san was feeding the sparrows on the courtyard.
I suddenly realize that I'm getting on her way....
After she saw my face for sure, she relaxed her lips a little.
"Please do not mind.... Kamikita-san."
This is not good. Because I just messed up, my head can't work just right....
"N- Nice weather, isn't it?"
No. That's not it.
"....yes, it's a nice weather."
Nishizono-san replied me with a smile.
...is that it?
"Um, what are you feeding them?"
I calmed down a little.
"It's just regular bread, bread crust to be exact. My lunch today is egg and cutlet sandwiches, so it's the leftovers."
"That's right. Crust."
Where do they sell bread crust? I unconsciously cross my arms and begin think.
"Um, I made the sandwiches myself, so..."
"Fuee, you made them yourself!?"
...I have never seen cutlet sandwich anywhere but on the shelves of convenience store.
"Yes. It's easy to make. Also, I can eat sandwiches while reading. It's very convenient."
This time her eyes are focused on the book. ....It's filled with rows of unfamiliar Kanji characters.
(It does look complicated....)
When I was about to ask what kind of book it is, Nishizono-san already spoke out ahead of me.
"What is it?"
She changed the way she hold the book that I can't see it.
"N- No. It's nothing."
The way I said it made me sounded like I was trying to dodge the question.
"Ah, errm... Do you like sparrows?"
"...No, I don't eat them."
"W- Well, we shouldn't eat them..."
I think now she's dodging the question instead....
...but, to think that Nishizono-san deliberately brought the bread crust,
maybe she likes birds. ...That's adorable.
But, Nishizono-san didn't say anything.
Instead of answering me, she looked up to the sky. To the sky which the birds just flew off to.
Just like her, I try to see that sky with these eyes.
...though, I'm not sure if we were looking at the same sky.
The two of us were just watching the sky wordlessly like that.
Suddenly, Nishizono-san takes the parasol beside her and stands up.
"Oh, are you going already?"
There is still a plenty time to chat before the afternoon class begin.
(I wonder if I really were just a hindrance...)
Then, she tilted her head. Looking at me fixedly, Nishizono-san seemed to be thinking about something.
I wonder what it is.
"Kamikita-san, Um.... I'm sorry if I made you uncomfortable."
Suddenly she apologized. I— I wonder why.
"Eh, um, but.... I also disturbed your bird-feeding time, so it's okay."
"Well, that's true."
Ugh... She didn't deny it.
Feeling a little bit better, Nishizono-san says,
"...where do you like to be, Kamikita-san?"
"Well, Kamikita-san is usually not in classroom when lunch break either. So... I thought perhaps you also have your own favorite place somewhere."
Gulp. I was choked by her words. I can't possibly say that it's the rooftop....
"Sorry. It seems that I shouldn't have asked."
I was unable to answer immediately, so Nishizono-san bowed her head slightly.
"Fuee, that's not it~~"
I shook my head and answered so.
"...If you don't mind, please try sitting here too. Perhaps you can see a different scenery from your favorite place."
"S- Sure. ...Thank you."
"Well then, please enjoy yourself, but don't be late for class."
Nishizono-san turned her back while saying that.
Her back was completely hidden by her white umbrella.
Looking from behind, it does look like a walking parasol.
While I'm at it, I try to sit under the Zelkova tree.
(In the end, it was all messed up...)
Just by a small thing, I get flustered immediately. That's my bad habit.
I sighed once.
"Yup," I nodded.
This time I managed to talk with Nishizono-san.
...Next time, let's talk more about so many things.
Like, what kind of book you're reading.
What kind of cooking you can make.
...and why you're always under the parasol.
I just came up with so many things to talk about when it's already too late.
...really, what a blunder.
It feels very comfortable under the Zelkova tree.
When I look up, the sunlight sparkles through the leaves.
I decided to sit here a little longer.
When I was dozing under the Zelkova tree, I remembered that I was going to the vending machine.
I'm a bit reluctant to leave, but I'm sure this pleasant place won't change, until I come here again someday with nice weather.
Maybe this place will become much more wonderful when the leaves turn red and come fluttering down in autumn.
...I can't wait until that time comes.
Leaving the courtyard, I head to the vending machine next to the gym.
There are vending machines in the cafeteria as well, so there are not so many people using this one. Even so, it seems that some students still buy drinks here on lunch break.
There are some boys laughing excitedly as they walk. Looking at the cups they're holding, I'm wondering what I should drink.
If it was winter, I'd settle with hot cocoa, but since it's warm today, maybe something else will be better.
Any kind of sweet things are delicious. Orange juice is great, but I also like the tingling feeling from carbonated drinks.
I can't decide. Well, I'll think about it when I arrive there. Increasing my pace, I go to the vending machine.
There is a hat and cape. This time I can remember the name easily. It's Noumi-san.
Noumi-san is a quarter foreigner from somewhere. She's well known even to other classes.
She's like a mini-celebrity.
...Noumi-san for some reason seemed to be lost in thought and sways her mantle side to side in front of the vending machine.
She occasionally puts her finger in front of the button and pulls it back, then sways in her mantle cape again.
I tried greeting her.
"Yes? Ah, Kamikita-san."
She turned around to me and smiled.
"Good afternoo... No, um, um...."
She seems to be thinking very hard.
"Ha- Hallo~ Miss Kamikita."
"D-Didyuu habu a naisu weiku?"
"Non, non. Week. Okay?"
...with such exchange, Noumi-san sighed.
"...it seems that Kamikita-san has better English than me."
"Fue? That's not true."
"This isn't right. I should have been the one who said "Non, non!" to Kamikita-san.
And everyone in the class should be asking me for English homework.
And if they're not coming bustling over me, it's just not right."
"I- Is that so?"
And once again she sighed.
"But the road is still long and full of hardship.... The mountains of Hakone are the most precipitous in the country..."
....It seems that Noumi-san is better in Japanese.
I have problems with Japanese lesson, and Noumi-san has problems with English.
The two of us sighed at the same time.
"I shouldn't be depressed."
She jumps and face upward.
"In order to do that, first I have to think what kind of beverage that can make me look foreigner-ish."
"That's right. I think "American Blend" coffee is the one most foreigner-ish. What do you think!?"
"Yeah, it does sound foreign."
"But, I can't drink coffee much since it's bitter."
It seems that this is what she had been troubled over since some time ago.
"Ah, so Noumi-san can't stand coffee as well."
I, too, don't really like bitter things.
"Yeah. But if I do my best, I might be able to drink it."
She presses the button as she toughens her will.
And after she did, she crossed her arms, thinking about something.
"...Kamikita-san called me Noumi-san, right?"
"Eh? Eh? Did I say it wrong?"
"Not at all. I'm Noumi. I am No Me."
Somehow Noumi-san puffed out her chest.
"If possible, please call me Kudryavka."
"Sure. Then, Kuu-chan."
"That's right, I'm Kuu-chan."
She said that happily since she seems to like that nickname. But, for me, names like Kudryavka are not familiar at all.
"Whaaa~ Whawhawhawhat is it!?"
"Ahahaha! Get and Capture!"
"I was caught! And I received double humiliation from such perfect English pronunciation!!"
Kuu-chan was caught by a girl with unique hairstyle.
She's not from my class, but I know her. She's Saigusa-san.
Saigusa-san for some reason often comes to our class on lunch break.
She often comes to chat with someone in our class.
Someone will mistook her as our classmate if they didn't know about her.
"Aiight, it's today's big catch!"
"Wafuu! I was caught by a bad fisherman!"
Kuu-chan is dragged just like that.
...and they're coming back.
"I think this one will become tastier if I let it grow more. We must save up natural resources. Release, release."
"F-Fue? Are you going to eat her?"
"And she's even making fun of my small stature! Triple humiliation!"
Saigusa-san laughs while holding Kuu-chan.
"Fill yourself up and multiply, fill this world, okay?"
Kuu-chan is being released.
"I can't multiply even if I eat a lot, you know!? That said, I'm not even sure if I can grow any bigger... Mumble mumble."
"So, you're up for some drinks too, Kamikita-san?"
"Eh, ah, yeah."
She remembers my name. ...I'm quite happy.
"It's less crowded here on lunch break. There are too many people in the cafeteria."
She said as she walked toward the vending machine.
"Hm, what's this one?"
She takes the cup of coffee from inside.
"She changed the topic!? Gaan!"
"Well, the topic has changed a long time ago, seriously."
Kuu-chan feels dejected.
"Seriously, what is this?"
"Yeah, that's my American. In fact, I am American."
"Eh? So Kud-kou is from America?"
"No. But my heart is now American. I'm Idaho potato."
"Well, then I'll confiscate this since you're just a fake."
"Gaan!? Don't you dare to make fun of Utah!"
...somehow it became this lively.
Just like that, the three of us continued talking until we returned to our classroom.
...No one seems to mind when Saigusa-san comes here.
Seems that she completely blends in.
"Hmm, Anego is never here when I come on lunch break."
"Ah, I'm talking about Kurugaya-san."
...Anego? That sounds so cool.
"I wonder where she is. Even though I'm head over heels for my lovely sweet honey~"
"...somehow those words will lead us to imagine something we shouldn't."
"Hmm? What did you imagine? What did you imagine!?"
"Wafuu! Sorry, sorry~!"
Saigusa-san grabs Kuu-chan's head and turns her round and round.
...It seems Kuu-chan always gets this kind of role.
"Eh, but where is your classroom, Saigusa-san?"
"You can just call me Haruka."
"Hmm, then Haru-chan."
"Ahahaha, you wanna know?"
"Spin three times while shouting "I'm falling!" like a dog. Then I'll tell you."
"What kind of dog is that?"
"Ah, instead of shouting, it'll be better if you scream "Whaaow!" and pose like Michael."
"Now you caught my attention."
...and Kuu-chan was looking at me with expecting gaze.
"Eeeh, I- I can't do it~"
"Hmm, if you can't then I won't tell you."
...In the end, she kept dodging the topic and didn't tell where her classroom is.
The school dormitory is divided into women and men dorms, but we join together in cafeteria when it's dinnertime.
That's how it supposed to be, but before we knew it, the dinnertime is divided. Girls go first, and then boys next.
When I look at my phone, there are numerous missed calls and messages from the girls I always eat together with.
I think I slept so soundly I couldn't even notice that.
...Of course I can't tell them to stay and eat with me now that it's too late....
"Alright," I nod.
By doing this, I feel much more positive. That's my magic spell.
I'm in the front of the cafeteria door. ...To begin with, this is the first time I eat dinner all by myself.
First experience is always making me nervous.
But, if I don't eat, I'm gonna be hungry....
And, the moment I was about to open the door...
A boy came flying through the door! I mean— He was sent flying!
"Wh- Whawha- What!?"
"Youuu! What the hell did I do, bastaaard!"
"Who else if it wasn't youuuu!"
These two big boys seemed to be fighting, with me between them.
...I don't talk to boys, I don't know their names too. But I know they're from my class.
"Blaming others for your cutlet being smaller... Your brain must be just as small too!"
The boy with bear-like gaze said as he glared.
"Do you think I can be deceived like that...?
My cutlet only has two pieces of the ends,
And the fact that only your cutlet is long enough that it jutted out from the plate...
Such long cutlet can't even get into the fryer!"
So said the boy on the other side, the one who is slimmer.
...and me, who was in between the two of them, falling on my butt.
(Whawhawhawhawhawhat is happening!?)
"Heh! You want a piece of me?"
"Yeah, I do... I'll beat out your guts, right here, right now."
"Interesting.... I'm gonna show you that my cutlet is not the only one that is beyond normal! Uoryaaaaa!"
I panic so much that I can't even raise my voice. What did I do wrong!?
If I knew I would met this kind of fate just because I was overslept,
I would have set my alarm clock properly!
Uwaaaa! I can't take it anymore!!
Bam! Wham! Screeeech! Vssssh!
When the two boys was crashing on each other, I landed on the ground.
In that 0,5 second,
...I have to get away someho-.....
"Uaaaaaaan! Here they go again!!"
I jump. They follow. I jump. They follow.
...again and again.
I could only run around while watching the two boys behind me.
"Auu, it hurt..."
...My head bumped to the wall.
"Uaaan!! It's a dead end!"
They're heading here with tremendous speed while exchanging fists on each other.
(Uaaaaah, so scary----!)
I hid myself, sticking my butt up, holding my head.
Tap tap tap tap tap....
I could hear footsteps.
They're slowly getting closer....
One grand footstep. And, one shadow flew.
In a moment.
...receiving a jump kick on the back of his head, the bear-like boy fell right on my side.
"Eh? Wha- What!?"
"You're causing trouble, you fools!"
After the hit, the boy yelled to the one who kicked him.
"Tsch! You! Don't just suddenly kick me from behind!!"
The one landing the kick was a petite girl.
I know this girl.
...a classmate, Natsume-san.
"Alright, alright. Stop it, guys."
There are another two boys coming after.
"And, Rin too.... You're being too flashy..."
...This guy, I haven't seen him before.
Looking at his uniform necktie, it seems that he's a senior one year ahead of us.
At the moment the two boys who were just fighting heard this person's voice,
their face turned somehow ashamed of themselves.
"These guys are totally dumb."
"Well, that's true, but you shouldn't have came between them, Rin..."
The person next to the senior guy,
The shortest boy among them,
turned around as he sighed.
"Sorry. Are you alright, Kamikita-san?"
"Ah, errm, yeah...."
The shortest boy pulled my hand, helping me to stand up.
...it seems that he knows my name. Then...
He's also a classmate, I think.
"You know, because he was..."
"You were the one who started adding fuel into fire."
"I told you, that's one damn long cutlet! Even I was surprised that it was so long..."
"Shaddup, you're noisy."
She kicked the bear-like boy again.
"Hey, Rin, I always tell you, right? Speak before act."
"It's their fault for being too stupid."
"...still, you shouldn't do that."
Listening to the petite boy, Natsume-san turns her face away.
"Moreover, you shouldn't make others got involved."
"That's right. Kamikita-san is extremely terrified."
"See, guys. Now, apologize to her."
Listening to his words, the two turned over to me.
"Well, so.... Sorry, I didn't notice at all.
I was too engrossed...
You know, the cutlet was surprisingly long...."
"I'm very sorry. I somehow couldn't see you."
I'm troubled. I don't know what to do now....
...I look to the senior and the short boy.
Looking at me like that, they both smiled.
...That was the beginning I started to notice "everyone".
Back then, I couldn't even imagine
that it was the beginning of our story.
The "beginning" was seasons ago.
It was so long ago that I almost unable to remember.
Sunny days, rainy days, cloudy days.
...We all were there.
We were running without knowing that.
This is the story of "everyone".
And I am, one of them.
The beginning... has come upon us.
Life is brief, so fall in love, young maiden.
This phrase 命短し、恋せよ乙女 (Inochi Mijikashi, Koiseyo Otome) comes from a Japanese folk song, Gondola no Uta. This is a pretty popular phrase, it has been used several times in drama or song titles.[^]
Idaho is the State of Potato. Nuff said. Do you know that they even have a website dedicated for Idaho Potato? You probably will find sacks of potatoes with "Idaho Potato" written on the labels in every supermarket in Japan. Oh, and Kud was probably just trying to sound foreign with the words without knowing what it means.[^]
Don't you dare to make fun of Utah!
This is a catchphrase from Kent Derricott, a Canadian gaijin tarento, living in Utah. Along with that phrase, he also said "Utah is not some countryside!" and "The land in Utah is cheap, so it's good." and apparently his reaction was really memorable for Japanese, that his image always comes to every Japanese when they're talking about Utah. I don't know when did he first say the phrase, but it's pretty old gag material. I'm sure Kud heard about it from her grandfather, and I'm sure it's not funny for anyone but old Japanese people who knows about it.[^]
